Bright Young Things: My Opinion.
So Victoria's Secret is launching a new line called Bright Young Things. The collection of clothing, swimwear, etc. is intended for middle/high school age girls. Ever since the line was announced the internet has been in a fit about it and I find it ludicrous.
As I understand it, people are upset because this new line will encourage promiscuity and destroy the self-worth of their daughters. Maybe it's because I'm 20, or because I don't have children, but I find this outrage to be nothing short of laughable. I shop at Victoria's Secret often and wear their products quite a bit, if not every day. Wearing these items has never encouraged me to run around acting like a little harlot. It didn't when I was in middle or high school, and it doesn't now. If your daughter can be persuaded to sleep around simply because she's wearing underwear that says "feeling luck?" on the butt, the problem isn't Victoria's Secret, it's your parenting skills.
The self-worth argument is even funnier to me. When I wear pretty things I feel BETTER about myself. I think many of these deeply upset people believe that the way Victoria's Secret advertises makes girls think that they're only good for sex or that this is the thing most valuable about them. I repeat, if your child infers that from a poster in the mall and takes it as fact, your parenting skills need some work!
Another argument that I've heard at nausea is that the models used in Victoria's Secret's ads give girls unrealistic expectations about their bodies and that this leads to eating disorders, depression, etc. I know (because I'm a girl) that this can be a really hard thing to deal with, especially in middle and high school. However, I disagree when it comes to VS models. Why? Because they aren't like all the other super skinny runway models who eat three cheese cubes a day. If you take the time to research, every one of the VS models are healthy. They eat great, workout, and make smart decisions about their bodies. All of the women who model for this brand are strong, intelligent, independent, and polished. In a society where the number of obese people is quickly escalating and many young girls think they can do nothing in life if they don't have a boyfriend, I think these women should be used as EXAMPLES. Yep, I said it. Now, girls do need to be aware of their body types and the fact that most people (including myself) will never look like Adriana Lima, but again, that's parenting. Children need to be taught how to respect themselves and those around them. It's their parents job to make sure they aren't learning solely from advertisements.
One last thing, every middle school girl I know already wears PINK like it's the only brand in existence. If anything, Bright Young Things could be better BECAUSE it will be for girls their age.
All in all I think this argument is quite silly and maybe if these parents didn't spend so much time ranting on Facebook they could spend more time making sure their daughters do know how much they're worth.

Three Wishes!
If I could have three wishes I would wish...
1) for a baby elephant that I could keep forever and all of the space/things I would need for it.
2) that I could eat as many donuts as I want for the rest of my life with no health problems or weight gain.
3) that I could be a Disney Vacation Club member and go on whatever vacations I want for the rest of my life.
